“Oh my God, this company is older than my country” - the Ambassador for USA, on a visit to Real Companhia Velha in the 1970’s.

Real Companhia Velha is the oldest wine company in Portugal, having recently celebrated 265 years of constant trading since 1756.

In the mid-18th century, there was a crisis with the port market due to a reduction of exports, extreme low prices & the situation being worsened by the fact the trade was dominated & controlled by British merchants.

With the support of a number of personalities including the King D. José I, the Portuguese Prime Minister Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, aka the Marquis of Pombal, a decision was made to create a chartered company. Its aim was to break the monopoly of the English Trading Post, to balance supply & demand, to ensure the quality & authenticity of the product & to protect it from disloyal competition by wines from other parts of the kingdom. All of this with royal approval & it soon became one of the Portuguese state’s greatest sources of income. This was the origin of Real Companhia Velha.

Since 1960, Real Companhia Velha has been run by the Silva Reis family, who have dedicated their efforts to the production of both port & Douro wines, focusing on the study & development of the Douro terroir & sustainability.

The 3rd generation of the family has Pedro Silva Reis Junior as the resident winemaker, Pedro Silva Reis, his father, as the Master Blender (for over 40 years) & Tiago Silva Reis developing the market to show a company that combines innovation with tradition in the 5 Quinta’s they own, which are considered some of the best in the Douro Valley.

  • Dandy White 2021

    RCV6-W - Douro DOC - Samarrinho & Cerceal - 11%

The Dandy white is made primarily from one of our most exciting grapes, the Samarrinho – a very old grape varietal that has been subject to a recovery project after being close to extinction. We look to pick the Samarrinho quite early for its freshness and sharpness as well for its delicate and unique aromatic profile. On the other hand, the Cerceal offers texture and volume.

Winemaking Process: Grapes are handpicked and transported to the winery in 150kg crates. After going through a manual sorting process, the grapes are de-stemmed and crushed on a pneumatic press. After a 24h decanting process, the must is fermented in stainless steel vats, at a 14-16ºC. The wine ages in the stainless steel vats for 6 months until bottling.

Tasting Notes: Yellow straw-like in colour, this wine offers a very fresh aromatic profile with notes of white fruit and grated stone, combined with delicate citric aromas. On the palate, it matches its nose profile, showing lightness and a vibrant, textured style with good acidity and a lingering finish. Fun and easy!

  • Dandy Red 2021

RCV6-R - Douro DOC - Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca & Viosinho (white grape variety). - 12%

By picking very early, they are able to find lightness, and fresh red fruit character and low alcohol content. The Viosinho, as a white grape, brings an exotic and original side “palhete style” with very soft tannins. A wine to pair with “giggles”, and enjoy at any moment… !

Winemaking Process: Grapes are hand-picked and transported to the winery in 40kg crates. Upon arrival, the grapes are de-stemmed and slightly crushed before moving into the fermentation vat. The must is fermented in stainless steel vats, at a 24-26ºC. For the Dandy, we chose to press the juice at about two thirds of the fermentation process, so that wine can finish its alcoholic fermentation with no skin-contact for less extraction and softer tannins. The 8% of Viosinho is later added to the blend. The wine ages in used large french oak vats for 8 months until bottling.

Tasting Notes: This wine draws our attention at first for its light garnet colour – unusual for Douro reds. On the nose we get notes of cherry, raspberry and white flowers combined with cool hints of greens. On the palate we get a fun, vibrant style, with a light structure and smooth tannins, which together with its lower alcoholic content, offer a pleasureful and easy-drinking experience.

Food Pairings: Fabulous on its own as well as matching poultry, charcuterie, asian cuisine, mushrooms and light cheeses.

Séries Range

  • The séries concept

The concept behind SÉRIES is limited release monovarietal wines with grapes selected from class A Douro field blends. With the main goal to be to highlight the quality and characteristics of lesser known Douro varietals…

The Series represent the passion for innovation and experimentation in the search for new wines and diverse styles of vinification. This effort reflects the backstage work developed by RCV winemaking and viticulture team, beginning in 2001, with the recovery and replantation of more than 30 indigenous grape varieties (some close to extinction). In the last 20 years, examples of these grape varietals were planted at our “Quintas”, in single blocks with no less than 1ha, allowing enough quantity for individual vinification with the purpose of bottling as experimental singles varietal wines.

Keep looking into our selection as new monovarietal will be added in a regular basis!

Quinta das Carvalhas

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Reference:RCV-OLIVE

Quinta das Carvalhas’ olive grove is planted on a shale soil terrain with steep inclinations. Most of our olive trees are older than one century; in which we apply a biological method of production. Within each grove, we have a diverse mixture of varieties which include: Cordovil, Negrucha, Coimbreia, Madural, Molar and Verdeal.

At Quinta das Carvalhas our approach to oliviculture is very traditional in which we respect all ancestral precedures and when it comes to the culture of the olive.

The harvest is done manually between December and January; with the traditional method of buckling onto large sheets placed right bellow each olive tree. We transport the freshly picked olives in 20kg boxes to the oil mil where the olives are carefully separated from any remaining leaves and the oil is extracted at very low temperatures ensuring the preservation of its qualities in terms of flavour and aroma.

We produce an olive oil of superior quality, rich in aromas and intense in flavours. It shows good ripeness and good structure, with slight fruity notes and excellent taste. We recommend this olive oil with fine, crispy bread, bruschettas or for seasoning.
